SEO TIPS AND TRICKS: DIVERSIFY YOUR PLACEMENT
The key to good keyword use is diversification. You want to make sure that you place your keywords in different types of text and throughout different areas of your page/post. Here are the 5 ways we recommend placing keywords:
1. IN THE TITLE OF THE PAGE/POST
It's an easy mistake to make using keywords but it's so important to your SEO. It's often what is displayed on Google search results unless you've specified otherwise using an SEO tool (like Yoast). If we're talking HTML this is your page title attribute usually in the <head></head> portion of the page. However, if you're using any kind of CMS then you can easily define the page/post title in the user interface or dashboard.
2. IN HEADER AND SUB-HEADERS (H1, H2)
Google not only crawls your page title, it crawls your headers. If you're not using headers and sub-headers make sure to get them into your pages and posts. They are a very easy way to increase your SEO score. Also, make sure to use your keywords in them, as this will help you rank better for the keywords you've chosen. This is easily forgotten as people are often too wrapped up in how the pages looks rather than how it functions behind the scenes.
3. IN THE MAIN BODY TEXT (P)
Similar to how Google will crawl your page titles, it crawls all the text on your entire page. That includes the main body of your pages/posts or paragraph text (P). This is where you'll probably get in the majority of your keyword use, however it's also the place that can get the most spammy. You want to make sure you get your keyword in anywhere from 3-5 times but try not to exceed that. You don't want to cheapen your page/post by using your keyword too much, but make sure to get it in.
4. IN YOUR META-DESCRIPTION
If you're not using a CMS like WordPress then the meta description is something that can often go unnoticed. CMS's like WordPress often come with handy little tools where you can craft your meta descriptions, but if not you'll have to manually put it in using HTML. Either way you want to make sure you have one. You also want to incorporate you keyword(s) into your meta description as Google will also crawl and index this. Google will also display this by default if the page comes up via search so you want to make sure you've written a nice short summary of the page.
5. IN YOUR SEO TITLE (FOR PLUGINS, ETC)
This is very similar to #1 above but it's worth re-iterating especially for those using WordPress and SEO tools like Yoast or something else. If you're running an SEO plugin, often times these will contain overrides for what your pages/post will display when they come up on a Google search (or other search engines for that matter). If this is the case you'll want to make sure that your keywords and/or title that you selected for the page matches your SEO title in whatever plugin you're using to make sure everything is showing up just how you want and that you're getting the SEO credit you deserve for that page.
REMEMBER NOT TO BE SPAMMY:
The last thing to note is not to be too spammy with your keywords. If you spam keywords in your page or post Google's newer smarter algorithm will detect that and dock you points on your SEO score. That's bad. Use them, incorporate them, but don't abuse them. Try to keep it around 5 times in your body (p) and work it into your title and headers and you should be good to go.
